As a wave of nationalism and populism sweeps across parts of North America, the U.K., Europe and other parts of the world, it is perhaps more important than ever that we send our young people abroad in greater numbers in order to discover different people and cultures, and to understand, accept, celebrate and embrace all of our differences and our diversity. But we know the world can be a dangerous place with natural disasters, extreme weather, new and often deadly viruses such as Ebola and Zika, and terrorist attacks as seen in Paris, Brussels, Nice, Munich, San Bernadino and Orlando. If we are to send more students abroad to work and gain the valuable and often critical experience that comes with an international internship, we need to be prepared and identify ways to help keep them safe and free to maximize their opportunities, without wrapping them in an overly protective bubble or shielding them from the very people, cultures and experiences that are paramount to the cultural immersion experience we are providing. This session will explore finding that delicate balance and give participants concrete skills and ideas on how to go above the international educational field’s minimum requirements and standards, using empirical knowledge, real life court decisions, incidents and accounts of the presenters, as well as deep discussion and interactive audience participation in a workshop setting. WORKSHOP PRESENTERS: William Hoye, IES Abroad; Rachel Criso, University of Michigan; Maria del Carmen Cortes Arce, IES Abroad Santiago
