Biography
Toivo Tänavsuu is an Estonian physician, writer, and former investigative journalist whose work bridges medicine, public communication and social impact. After a distinguished career in journalism, including many years as an investigative reporter and feature writer, he made a career transition and studied medicine at the University of Tartu, becoming a medical doctor. Today, he works in emergency medicine across several hospitals in Estonia, providing frontline care in one of healthcare’s most demanding specialties.
Alongside his clinical work, Tänavsuu remains an writer and public commentator on health, medicine, and society. He is the author of the bestselling book “How a Dinosaur Learned to Become a Doctor and Survived”, a candid and often humorous account of changing careers in adulthood and navigating the challenges of medical education. The book became widely popular in Estonia for its honest portrayal of personal reinvention, resilience, and the realities of modern healthcare.
Tänavsuu is also best known as the co-founder and supervisory board member of Vähiravifond Kingitud Elu, Estonia’s largest charitable foundation supporting cancer patients. Established in 2014 after Toivo’s mothers illness, the foundation has helped thousands of people gain access to life-extending and potentially life-saving treatments that would otherwise remain out of reach. Numerous volunteers from all over Estonia contribute to the mission.
